This is an annual event sponsored by the Sarasota Kiwanis Club to benefit "Vets Operation Eco" and the Club's Foundation. Because of the pandemic, this year's Veteran's Day Breakfast will be the same but different. What is the same is that there will be a Key Note Speaker and reservations are required. What is different is that donations are requested in lieu of ticket sales. Also different, you can "arrive" at 8:00 am instead of 7:00 (and you don't have to get dressed). The Key Note Speaker is Tim Wilkins. He’s a stand-up comedian and his presentation was very uplifting, which is perfect for the time we’re in. (See Flyer attached to this email.)

Superintendent of Sarasota School District
Nov 23, 2020 12:00 PM
Sarasota County Schools formally welcomed Dr. Brennan Asplen as the district’s new Superintendent of Schools this morning. The ceremony, officiated by the Honorable Judge Lee Haworth, was held in the School Board’s chambers. A small gathering of Dr. Asplen’s family & friends, School Board members & district personnel, and members of the citizen-comprised Community Advisory Committee witnessed the special occasion. Video of the ceremony will be re-aired on the school district’s Education Channel and is also available anytime on the district’s YouTube channel. Please see below for Dr. Brennan Asplen’s remarks from the ceremony: “I am honored to serve as the new Superintendent of Sarasota County Schools. Let me begin by thanking everyone who is in attendance this morning; To the School Board and Community Advisory Committee, I thank you for the confidence you have placed in selecting me, and I fully comprehend the mission that you have entrusted to my care. To the district employees, I appreciate the support you have already displayed, and I look forward to laboring alongside you to serve our students. And to my family, I thank you for being the foundation of my career- My wife is my rock, who I admire as an educator herself, my children are my inspiration, who keep me relevant, and my grandson is my joy and hope for tomorrow. Sarasota County is an extraordinary place, and its school district is consistently one of the highest-ranked in Florida. I am excited to work with the Board Members, school district employees, students, parents, and the community to not only continue, but also elevate our commitment to providing a high-quality public education for all students. Though we have each been profoundly impacted by the pandemic, I have faith that we can come together as a community to support our schools. All students have a right to a stellar public education in an environment where they can shine, make memories, and grow into their fullest potential. We must not lose sight of the importance of academic, emotional, and civic growth for our children, even during this time of adversity. The start of this school year will certainly be unique, and it will surely present learning curves for us all. I ask for your compassion, understanding, and collaborative spirit – not just for our school communities, but towards your neighbors, children, and anyone you may encounter. Our children are looking to us to lead by example. I know we can achieve great things if we all unite positively to forge ahead into this new school year; we must maximize the present, however challenging, while we look toward a bright future. I am humbled and sincerely grateful to now serve as your Superintendent. I look forward to getting to know our community better and cannot wait to lead Sarasota County Schools into its new school year, and beyond.” |

Arthur “Art” Riley of Westminster, Maryland, USA, was elected president of Kiwanis International and will begin his term on Oct. 1, 2020. He was elected during a Kiwanis International council meeting held in lieu of the annual Kiwanis International Convention. He was first elected to the board of trustees in July 2014. Art's dedication to Kiwanis began in 1956 during travel with his father to the Kiwanis International Convention in San Francisco, California. That experience gave him an initial view of the Kiwanis world that resulted in his involvement in many Kiwanis activities. Official service in the Kiwanis family began as a member of Key Club and has continued as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster, Maryland, where he has served for 39 years, including many leadership positions. Additionally, he is a member of the Centennial Internet Club and the Kiwanis Club of State Line, Maryland. Art’s leadership has also been demonstrated as a Key Club lieutenant governor and numerous positions within the Capital District, culminating as governor in 2007-2008. During his tenure on the Kiwanis International Board, Art has served as counselor to 12 Kiwanis districts and traveled to more than 30 districts. Additionally, Art and his wife, Vickie, participated in a site visit to Cambodia for The Eliminate Project, in conjunction with UNICEF. Serving on Board committees has resulted in Art’s passion for recognizing and fulfilling the Kiwanis mission of serving children, strengthening Kiwanis through expanded service and partnership development, improving the Kiwanis image worldwide and expanding international understanding. Art’s recent Kiwanis duties include service as board chair of Kiwanis Youth Programs, chairing the board committee on Public Relations, Image and Marketing, and serving as a member of the executive committee and board committee on Membership and Education. He has also served as a member of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund Board of Trustees. Art has received Diamond Level George F. Hixson Fellowship and Diamond Level Walter Zeller Fellowship honors. He and Vickie are Major Gift donors and members of the Founders Circle. Outside of Kiwanis, Riley has managed pharmacy practices for more than 45 years. His wife, a retired elementary school teacher, is a former president of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster. They have three adult children and three grandchildren. Kiwanian since 1961, Dr. Wil, as he is known, became interested in early childhood issues and helped develop a program — Young Children Priority One (YCPO) — focusing on children from the prenatal period to age 5. As Kiwanis International president, 1990-91, he introduced the program to Kiwanis Clubs worldwide. The international program led to Kiwanis’ partnership with UNICEF to virtually eliminate iodine deficiency worldwide, bringing increased use of iodized salt — and healthy brain development — in young children. Dr. Wil also has been involved in the ELIMINATE project, the drive to eliminate maternal neonatal tetanus, a deadly disease that kills nearly 34,000 babies annually. “Among the millions of hours of community service hours Kiwanis clubs around the world do, Young Children Priority One has been one of most impactful and long lasting,” said Dr. Wil, governor of the Florida District of Kiwanis, 1977-78. “Studies have shown, time and time again, the positive benefits of focusing on children 0-5. This is when we can prevent many future problems, allowing them to have a strong start in life, which enhances their chances of success in school and in their adult years. That’s why we’re continuing Young Children Priority One in Florida through this new fund.”
The Florida Kiwanis Foundation has several levels of giving opportunity to honor the Blechmans — who provided “seed” money for the fund — and their work. Moneys raised for the Blechman fund will be awarded in the form of grants to Florida Kiwanis clubs for projects specifically focusing on children to age 5. Dr. Wil is well known for his service around the world, as well as his wearing bowties. Everyone who donates receives an eye-catching pin featuring a bowties. |

Infinite Wishes Foundation
Mar 08, 2021 12:00 PM
Infinite Wishes Foundation is in memory of my best friend, Donna's sister-in-law, and Al's sister, Joan, who developed stage 4 lung cancer at the age of 53. Since she was a young girl, it was Joan's dream to swim with the dolphins. She loved dolphins and anyone that knew her, knew that, too! Joan's dream came true on April 17, 2013. Sadly, we lost Joan eight months later, on December 20, 2013. In honor of her life and her commitment to helping others, we founded Infinite Wishes Foundation to help other adults with life-threatening illnesses have their wishes fulfilled. We are an all-volunteer group of caring and dedicated individuals that came together to organize a nonprofit foundation. Each of us brings something different to the foundation, but we all have the same goal; the desire to make a difference in the lives of adults facing a life-threatening illness. Through Joan's legacy we can help make dreams come true. Currently, we are serving the states of Florida & New Jersey. It is our goal to provide as many people as possible with their wishes and create cherished memories with their loved ones.
